We've been to gar's in the past, and I wasn't impressed then nor am I now. Everyone raves about their cheese hamburgers ...Umm it's a dry slab of over-cooked meat, burnt from the flat top.. . Not my idea of a good burger. The bun isn't toasted; you get no pickle, lettuce, tomato to make it less DRY. My biggest complaint is that the ONLY cheese they offer for a cheeseburger is Swiss yak! The fries were decent, but I can go to McDonald's for less money and get better quality fries. I thought the place had an unkempt, run-down look to it. On the positive side, they had the Tiger's game on.

Burger and a brew place. Popped in Sunday evening for a quick bite. Forgot that the burgers only come in size "huge". I didn't request a toasted bun, and I felt the bread was a bit soggy. They were out of American Cheese and we had to ask to sub cheddar. The bacon could have been cooked a bit more. The fries were perfect, the 2 other deep fried apps: (cauliflower and cheese bites) were bar joint great. My friend didn't like the slightly greasy refillable ketchup bottle and the place wasn't dirty, but not immaculate. My beer glass was a bit foamy but the price can't be beat. It's not a "lounge" but a local watering hole. The bar area is dark and doesn't give a very welcoming feel. The side room is more comfortable, bright, and feels cleaner. I've had mixed service in the past, but it was great last week. There is outdoor full service seating for warm weather, but FYI it is oversized picnic tables. Don't come for fancy, come for great local grub and cheap beer. Minimal water view but the river is right across the street for freighter watching.

Very nice, clean place. Generous portions such as salads with fresh veggies. Love the nice outdoor patio facing the St. Clair River.

Hometown bar. Nothing special but good food and fun atmosphere. Enjoy the deck -full bar- deep fried food and burgers after your free popcorn appetizer. Big screen tv for watching those sporting events.

Holy cow! Huge burgers! My husband and I could have ordered one burger and fries and we would have been satisfied. Burgers were good, atmosphere was different.

Came here because my husband has fond memories of a previous visit with his father, many years ago. Expecting it to be a small, local bar, we were both quite thrown to find just how small and local (and dirty) it was. Everyone stared at us as we entered and tried to locate a table.. Everyone except the staff who all seemed unavailable and too busy to assist us with finding a seat. We sat at the bar and decided to stay despite the uncomfortable and unclean environment, because after all.... some of the dirtier places have the best food, right?? The bartender greeted us promptly and was extremely friendly. My husband ordered a beer, and I ordered a glass of White Zin.. however they were out of the wine and could neither suggest or offer another sweet white wine. We both ordered burgers, but were not asked how we would like them cooked. With my experience in dining, as well as with food services, if the establishment does not ask the customer for the temperature of the burger, it is served Medium Well -- Well. Ours were served bright pink in the middle.. and that was with the dim lighting! I can only imagine how undercooked it actually was! The bartender was happy to send it back to the kitchen for an up-cook. The burger itself was ok. Nothing spectacular and I found that it had an extremely weird, mushy texture. My husband didn't seem to think so. The bartender continued to be attentive until we were finished eating and my husband ordered his second beer. At which point, she kept her back to us (at the bar!) and never even glanced up to see how we were doing. After sitting with nothing to drink for about 10 minutes, we asked for the check. I feel as if I should be insulted by the sudden change of personality. Did we do something to offend her? We were nothing but courteous and polite the entire time and I am baffled as to why the sudden change in attitude and service. Upon leaving, I took a quick trip to the restroom. It was interesting to say the least. There was one stall.... And it didn't have a lock! I'm very fortunate that no one else needed to use the ladies room! What really creeped me out however, was the towel dispenser.... It had one cloth towel that turns as you pull it and just rotates around. I've never seen anything like it and I don't quite understand it, but gross!!! How unsanitary!!!! I feel sorry that my husband had such fond memories of this place and then found such disappointment in our recent visit. Even if the service and food had been 100%, I'm not sure we would return due to the extreme uncleanliness of the establishment. I've never felt dirty being inside a bar before this.

I remember when I first went into Gar's bar. My father took me there when I was about 11 or 12 in the late '80'a and told me that the burgers would be huge, and I probably couldn't finish it. That was an understatement, particularly for a kid. What I TRULY remember though was the taste, and the novelty of having the cheese and onions cooked inside the burger, which was a new thing for me. I have never had a bad burger here - heck, I've never had a bad meal here - but I admit I sometimes have to be a bit "in the mood "to head to Gar's, The mood being mostly revolving around having a craving and or I need to fill my gullet. Now for those of you that would think that it's "horrible" to take a child to a bar, realize that Gar's isn't a dive, and arguably it's less of one now then when I went in as a kid. The place has great food and the complimentary popcorn basket is always full, but if your vegetarian this will never be your kind of place, nor should you expected to be. If you're into history, there are all kinds of pictures and histories of ships built in Marine City and the surrounding area, and it's not unusual to find people who haven't been here walking up to the walls and reading them. The spookiest image though is the one of the ghost or Grim Reaper hunkered down over the Edmund Fitzgerald; you can almost hear Gordon Lightfoot's song playing in the background, and then you realize the jukebox isn't playing. Anyway, if you want to good beer in an unbelievably good burger, check it out. If you're expecting hummus, a raw bar or baba ghanouj, find someplace else.

We went here before, during and after a show at the Snug. It was packed on a weeknight at 7, but our beers were served quick, cold and a good price. Later on we ate and enjoyed our chicken sandwich, blt, shrimp, fries and chili. It was all tasted good and good portion sizes. The margarita had too much sour. I love getting free popcorn. The decor is old, the floors are off level and different styles, and I almost hit my head on the bathroom ceiling. Good food, quick service but needs a bit of a facelift.

Leave it to my dad... "They have burgers the size of your head!" That tells me right away they probably suck. I didn't want to go, but he almost literally forced me to go, for God knows the reason. Came in at five on a Friday before they got really busy. It took about 40 minutes to get a burger, and it wasn't even that great. It was just a mound of meat with seemingly no seasoning, and canned mushrooms. They throw a few bits of onion and pickle on the plate with it, but this is one mediocre burger. On top of that, they put the burger on a piece of store bought white bread, basically, which is an awful choice. The burger's so soft that the meat pretty much slides right out when you pick it up. On the plus side, a half pound burger is about $7, so it IS a good value. Thing is, I like my burgers to have flavor. I don't care for condiments on my burger a lot of the time anymore, but I almost needed it on this bland, boring burger. Pass. The prices are decent, but the wait was too long for a single burger that was ordered before the people piled in. I might like it a little more if I lived in the area, but there are better options near me. Hey, at least you get complimentary popcorn. I could have put that on the burger to give it more flavor now that I think about it... damn. Anyway, two stars mainly because the burger isn't *awful*, and the pricing is good, but the wait was too long, and the food -- at least the burger -- was not worth the wait. In short, Gar's is very pedestrian.

Great food, cold beer, hometown bar atmosphere. Good in the winter, even better in the summer when you can sit outside on the deck and watch the freighters go by on the St. Clair River. The area's best burgers! Maybe the best I've ever had. Okay, definitely the best. Big and tasty. Get a basket of fries and a beer or two and you're in heaven for an hour or two.
